What is a Fleeting Family Portrait?
Fleeting Family Portraits began with a simple question: How can I document my multi-generational family in a unique way?
The resulting e-book captures twelve family members across six generations. Each “portrait” preserves the fleeting aspects of personality that traditional ancestry documentation often overlooks, especially for younger generations.
Data visualizations and summary pages also connect family members through both shared traits and individual differences.

Behind the Scenes
Exploration revealed that traditional ancestry documentation often centers on older generations’ past experiences and rarely captures the ever-changing perspectives of younger family members.
Instead than asking questions that require years of life experience, I focused on daily routines and current favorites in order for younger generations to participate.
After initial user testing with interactive surveys and lighthearted prompts, I refined the approach to a short-answer format that worked across ages and yielded deeper, more meaningful insights.
